Supporting Local Independent Booksellers

The increase in sales of eBooks and people’s tendency to now buy their books online hasn’t just affected Borders, it has affected hundreds and hundreds of local book stores across the country. In the day and age of instant accessibility and gratification from buying online, these independent booksellers have seen less people browsing and buying in their store in person.

Broadway Books, a local book store in Portland, Oregon, was struggling with lack of customers and income in 2009, when the owner’s son took his pleas for buying a book at the store to the Internet. Aaron Durand wrote on his blog about his mother’s struggling bookstore and promised customers who bought over $50 in books that in return, he would buy them a burrito. The blog post turned viral and before Aaron could believe it, local news stations and papers were covering the story–just the publicity Broadway Books needed. The blog post ended up fueling customers to support their local store, and with that the store got the boost it needed to stay in business. The whole story about Broadway Books, blogs, and burritos can be found over at Inc. and you can check out Broadway Books online here, and their blog here.

If Broadway Book’s story inspired you to stop buying from the big sellers online and walk into a local bookshop yourself, you’re helping the local community and economy one step at a time. If you’re unable to get to a local book shop, or don’t know of any in your area–try buying from these independent stores online. Broadway Books sells online now, and Abe Books is a great place to look for rare, new, and used books from thousands of independent bookshops all over the country.
